Want a large sun-loving plant for your space? Then look no further than Strelitzia nicolai. The Bird of Paradise plant is so-called because of the fabulous orange and purple flowers which resemble a birds head. It's leaves are exotic looking and paddle shaped on long elegant stems. The glossy dark green leaves tend to have some splits in them, this is a clever trick the plant does to ensure that the younger leaves receive plenty of light. This is particularly noticable on the mature leaves and is a part of the plants natural charm.
Light:
Needs 4-6 hours of direct or bright light to encourage flowering. A south facing room or warm conservatory is ideal.
Water:
During the growing season allow the top half of soil to dry out. Over winter, give just enough to prevent the soil from drying out completely. A sign the plant is not getting enough water, are leaves starting to curl, split, and turn brown.
Current height 1 metre. Can grow 1.5 to 2 metres.
Comes with detailed care instructions.
