This amazing air plant is easy to care for. Part of the bromeliad family this small epiphyte originates from the American jungles where it grows on trees. Sage green velvety leaves, sometimes flushed with purple. When flowering time is approaching the leaves turn almost dark salmon pink and present a bright pink central flower spike from which the delicate purple flowers appear.
It takes moisture and nutrients from the air so needs a humid environment to thrive, so a bright bathroom or steamy kitchen would be ideal.
Display the plant near a window and to water it my preference is to submerge it in a bowl of water for 20-30 minutes. In winter about every 2 weeks. Spring/summer-weekly. Rainwater is best at room temperature or pond water. You could use bottled spring water. Avoid distilled or filtered water. Then give it a gentle shake to remove any excess as they dislike overwatering and hang up to dry. Alternatively you could spray the air plant thoroughly until water drips from the leaves.
After flowering this plant produces young known as 'pups'. Each pup can be removed from the mother once it reaches at least a 1/3 of the size of the mother. It can then be gently twisted off and be cared for in the same way. The mother plant will eventually die off but you will have one or two young plants to replace it and the cycle will continue.
